One of the key aspects of the museums dedicated to the display of the Pinault Collection in Venice over the past ten years—Palazzo Grassi since 2006 and Punta della Dogana since 2009—is the important presence of the artists themselves, their involvement at every moment, every step in the life of the museums: their program, the conception, planning, and installation of exhibitions, and their editorial and cultural components.

This is, of course, in part a consequence of their context: the context of a city that has, like none other, inspired artists for centuries; the context of an extremely stimulating architectural ensemble, as is demonstrated time and time again, each time an artist is invited to conceive a work or to supervise the installation of an existing one in either Palazzo Grassi or Punta della Dogana. They typically respond by either proposing a substantial reconfiguration of a work, engaging in a subtle dialog with the unique nature of the sites, or creating an entirely new piece. This context, ultimately, is that of an institution that, like its founder, François Pinault, constantly seeks to take risks and push its limits.

Since 2006, the presentation of works specifically designed or redesigned for these spaces and exhibitions is one of the most important and constant dimensions of the program of Palazzo Grassi–Punta della Dogana. It has created, in ten years, over ninety projects, both within its spaces (be it the exhibition spaces themselves, or certain more privileged spaces, such as the central cube of Punta della Dogana or the entrance atrium of Palazzo Grassi) but also outside, in Venice, its piazzas, canals, facades, and quays, including Charles Ray’s Boy with Frog, presented outside Punta della Dogana from 2009 to 2013, and which remains its unforgettable symbol.

From “Where Are We Going?” to “Slip of the Tongue,” from Rudolf Stingel to Danh Vo, this portfolio presents a selection of 32 of these installations, a souvenir photo-album of Palazzo Grasssi–Punta della Dogana’s first ten years.

As this issue goes to print, future projects by Fernanda Gomes, Haim Steinbach, Nina Canell, Henrik Olesen, and more are in the works… and will be celebrated in upcoming issues of the Pinault Collection magazine. M.B.
